Pannage pig foraging in the New Forest during autumn

New Forest Autumn FAQs: Pannage, Deer, Campsites & More

From pigs and ponies to campsite tips and top photo spots – here’s everything you need to know!

Autumn in the New Forest is a season full of charm – golden woodlands, misty mornings, and ancient traditions coming to life. No matter if you’re planning your first visit or returning for another peaceful getaway, we’ve rounded up answers to the questions we hear most at this time of year.

1. When does pannage season start – and where can you spot the pigs?

Each autumn, pigs are released into the Forest to eat fallen acorns – a centuries-old tradition known as pannage. Not only is it important for protecting the ponies and cattle from the toxic nuts, but it’s also one of the most memorable sights you’ll encounter whilst on your Camping New Forest getaway. Pannage usually begins in mid-September and lasts around 60 days, although the official dates are set each year depending on the size of the acorn drop. If you’re keen to spot these free roaming pigs, you’re most likely to encounter them in woodland areas around Burley, Beaulieu and Bolderwood. Though there’s no guarantee, they’re free roaming after all!

Please remember: Never feed or approach the pigs and always admire them from a safe distance.

2. What’s the best way to see deer rutting?

Autumn marks the start of rutting season for the New Forest’s deer. It’s a dramatic and fascinating time when stags compete for dominance. Late September through October is the best time to witness the rut. Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary is a great location to witness this, with a purpose-built viewing platform that gives you a safe and elevated view across the clearing. Fritham is another quieter location where you may catch glimpses if you’re patient. Be sure to head out early or just before sunset, bring binoculars, and keep a respectful distance. Never approach deer – they’re wild animals and this is a sensitive time of year!

3. Which campsites are open in October?

Autumn is one of the most peaceful times to camp in the New Forest, and a few of our sites stay open well into the season.

Setthorns Campsite

Open all year round, with hardstanding pitches, woodland surroundings, and direct access to walking and cycling trails.

Holmsley Campsite

Open until 31 October*, Holmsley is ideal for late-season family trips and offers great facilities such as an on-site shop and play park.

Long Meadow Campsite

Located just outside Brockenhurst, Long Meadow is a quiet, highly rated site that’s also open until the end of October.

Whether you’re pitching up under the canopy or going glamping for the last time this season, autumn trips offer cooler nights, crisp mornings, and fewer crowds.

4. Where are the best places for autumn photos?

The New Forest really comes alive in autumn. The golden canopy, soft light and morning mist make it a dream for photographers. Here are a few favourite spots:

Blackwater Tall Trees Trail

A scenic trail lined with mighty redwoods and golden beech leaves. Perfect for woodland shots. Once you’ve finished your walk, don’t miss the chance to drive or cycle the rest of the Ornamental Drive – it’s famous for its vibrant autumn palette.

Knightwood Oak

One of the oldest and most iconic trees in the Forest. Its wide, gnarled branches look striking against the seasonal colours.

Bolderwood

Combines scenic woodland with the chance to spot deer – a great mix of wildlife and landscape. There’s even a purpose built viewing platform so you may have more chance of capturing deer on camera! It’s also got a public car park for easy access and toilets nearby!

Lymington & Lepe

For coastal contrast, try a shoreline walk near Lymington or Lepe Country Park. The sea views paired with autumn skies are hard to beat.

Top tip: go early in the morning or late in the day for that golden hour glow.
