Important Updates on the New Forest Pony Drift

The New Forest’s Pony Drift Season is in full swing, and this means that certain areas of the national park will be closed to visitors for the next few months, with parking restrictions in effect. Each year, over 30 drifts are conducted across the New Forest, covering small sections at a time.

The Pony Drift is an annual event where Agisters, the local officials responsible for managing the forest’s wild animals, round up and inspect the ponies to ensure their health and fitness. These officials collaborate with Commoners, local landowners and residents, to gather as many ponies as possible. A key aspect of the drift is to monitor mares with foals and address any health concerns.

Given the size of the New Forest National Park, multiple drifts are scheduled throughout August to early November. During these periods, it is important for the public to stay clear of the drifting areas for safety reasons, as the behaviour of the ponies can be unpredictable.

For your safety, please avoid the drift areas during these times. Be on the lookout for warning signs and use alternative parking facilities. To ensure smooth operations and safety, do not park on verges, along access tracks, or block gateways.
