September in the New Forest is a great time to visit – quieter trails, softer light, and the first signs of autumn make it a dream for campers and nature lovers. With local traditions coming to life, and a packed calendar of seasonal events, there’s plenty to discover. Here’s some of the top things to do during your stay this September.

1. See the Heather in Bloom Before It Fades

Early September is your last chance to witness the New Forest’s heathlands in full purple bloom. Take a walk through areas like Rockford Common or Acres Down, where the pink and purple heather stretches for miles. The colour usually fades by mid-month, so don’t miss this natural beauty – it’s especially stunning at golden hour.

2. Spot the Free-Roaming Pigs of Pannage Season

Each autumn, pigs are released into the Forest to eat fallen acorns – a centuries old tradition known as pannage. From mid-September, you might see them snuffling around areas like Bramshaw, Burley, and Bolderwood. It’s a quirky and completely unique New Forest experience. Please admire them from a distance and never feed or touch them!

3. Experience the Romsey Show

Head just north of the Forest for one of the South’s biggest one-day country shows. The Romsey Show (Saturday, 13 September) is packed with livestock displays, horse shows, food tents, craft stalls, vintage vehicles, and family-friendly fun. It’s a great day out from any of our campsites!

4. Witness the Start of Deer Rutting Season

From September, the Forest’s deer enter rutting season – a time when stags begin competing for dominance. You may hear the eerie bellow of red deer echoing across the heathland. Visit Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary for a chance to spot fallow deer safely from the viewing platform. Bring binoculars and keep a respectful distance.

5. Discover Hidden History with Heritage Open Days

For a limited time in September, historic buildings across the New Forest open their doors for free as part of the national Heritage Open Days. Explore manors, museums, and estates that are usually off-limits – perfect for curious minds and rainy days. Keep an eye on the Heritage Open Days website for local listings and dates.

6. Visit the Beaulieu International Autojumble

Car lovers, take note: Beaulieu’s world-famous International Autojumble returns in early September (6–7 September). It’s the largest outdoor sale of motoring bits and bobs in Europe, with hundreds of stands. Whether you’re a collector or just curious, it’s a unique day out – and your ticket includes entry to the National Motor Museum.
