February is a brilliant time to visit the New Forest. The days are slowly starting to stretch out, the light lingers just a little longer, and the landscape begins to soften as the first signs of spring emerge. It’s a month that suits many kinds of visitors – families enjoying half term, couples looking for a peaceful escape, and anyone keen to explore the Forest without the crowds.
So if you’re staying at Setthorns Campsite or visiting for the day, here are some of the best ways to enjoy the New Forest this February.
Exploring with Family
February half term makes this a popular time for family-led adventures, and the New Forest is well placed for days out that work whatever the weather.
Paultons Park
A firm favourite for families, Paultons Park offers a full day of entertainment for children of all ages. From Peppa Pig World for younger visitors to the rides and attractions of Tornado Springs, it’s an easy and rewarding day trip from the Forest and ideal for making half-term memories together.

New Forest Heritage Centre
Perfect for a slower-paced outing, the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst brings the story of the Forest to life. With displays covering commoning, wildlife, and local traditions, it’s engaging for both adults and children, and entry is free, with donations welcomed.

Indoor Days Out (When the Weather Turns)
February weather can be unpredictable, but there’s no shortage of places to retreat indoors without cutting the day short.
Meeple Play Café
Ideal for families with younger children, Meeple Play Café offers a relaxed, screen-free environment with board games, imaginative play areas, and good coffee for grown-ups. It’s a welcoming place to warm up and slow the pace for an hour or two.

Beaulieu Motor Museum
A great option for mixed-age groups, Beaulieu offers far more than just the motor museum. Alongside historic vehicles, visitors can explore Palace House, the Abbey, and the gardens. Until 12 April, fans of Disney Pixar’s Cars can also spot familiar characters, making it a strong choice for both adults and children.

St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery, Lymington
For those visiting without children, or anyone with an interest in culture, St Barbe Museum offers a more reflective experience. This February, exhibitions focus on the Lymington River, with talks and events running throughout the month.
February for Adults & Couples
If you’re visiting the New Forest without children, February is an especially rewarding time. The Forest is calmer, paths are quieter, and there’s space to really take in the scenery.
Gentle walks through woodland and heathland are particularly enjoyable this time of year, with fewer visitors and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. Villages such as Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, and Lymington are ideal for browsing independent shops and cafés, or simply enjoying a slow afternoon wandering.
Spotting the First Signs of Spring
One of February’s quiet pleasures is noticing the subtle seasonal shift. Snowdrops begin to appear along woodland edges, followed by crocuses, primroses, and early daffodils. Birdsong becomes more noticeable too, with robins and thrushes increasingly vocal as the breeding season approaches.
On milder days, you may even spot New Forest ponies resting on the heathland, soaking up the first warmth of the year. Towards the end of the month, gorse can start to bloom, adding a subtle shift in colour to the landscape.

Where to Eat
After a day exploring, the New Forest offers plenty of places to refuel, whether you’re after something hearty or a more leisurely dining experience.
For relaxed pub dining, The New Forest Inn and The Trusty Servant are both popular choices, known for comforting food and welcoming interiors. The Oak Inn in Lyndhurst and The High Corner Inn near Ringwood are also well regarded for seasonal menus and cosy atmospheres.
If you’re looking for something a little more special, The Pig near Brockenhurst is renowned for its locally sourced, seasonal dishes. For coffee, cake, or a lighter bite, The Paddle Café in Brockenhurst remains a firm favourite.
