VE Day History Walks at Roundhill & Ocknell Campsites

As part of our VE Day 80 celebrations this May, we’re inviting guests to take a step back in time and explore the wartime history hidden beneath the trees and heathland of the New Forest. Join local wartime historian Marc Heighway for two fascinating guided walks at Roundhill and Ocknell, each uncovering the stories, structures…

History Walk at Roundhill Campsite – RAF Beaulieu

Taking place on Friday 9th May and again on Saturday 10th May, both starting at 10am, these two-hour walks from Roundhill Campsite Reception explore the former site of RAF Beaulieu, one of 12 New Forest airfields used during WWII.

Marc will guide you to key locations including bomb stores, air raid shelters, and the remains of runways and aircraft hangars. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of the men and women stationed here and gain a deeper appreciation for the role this quiet patch of countryside played in the war.

This walk covers around three miles and includes a mix of woodland paths, tracks, and open heathland.

History Walk at Ocknell – Explore RAF Stoney Cross

Later the same day, at 3pm on Friday 10 May, the second walk sets off from Ocknell Campsite Reception and takes you through the fascinating remains of RAF Stoney Cross.

You’ll discover parts of the old runway, scattered ruins, and even a few hidden relics still visible among the trees. Marc will share insights into the airfield’s operations and the lives of those who served here, giving you a real sense of the area’s historical significance.

Like the Roundhill walk, this route is approximately three miles and takes about two hours to complete.
