Each autumn, the New Forest comes alive with a centuries-old tradition known as pannage – a unique and charming sight that sees pigs roaming freely through the landscape.
What is Pannage?
Pannage is the ancient right of commoners in the New Forest to release their pigs to forage for fallen acorns, beech mast, and chestnuts. This tradition dates back to the time of William the Conqueror and is still practised today!

Why Are Pigs Released Onto the Forest?
Acorns, while harmless to pigs, are toxic to New Forest ponies and cattle. By allowing pigs to eat the acorns, pannage plays a vital role in keeping other free-roaming animals safe. It’s a natural form of land management that benefits the entire landscape.
When Will Pigs be Released in 2025?
In 2025, pannage season will run from Monday 15th September to Friday 28th November. During this time, you’re likely to spot pigs snuffling through the undergrowth throughout the Forest.
How Long Are Pigs Out on the Forest?
Pannage usually lasts for at least 60 days, but the length can be extended depending on the acorn crop. In what’s known as a “mast year”, when the Forest experiences a particularly heavy fall of acorns, pannage may be extended to protect the ponies.
Respecting the Pigs & Staying Safe
While it can be tempting to approach or feed the pigs, it’s important to admire them from a distance. Pigs can become aggressive if provoked. Always keep dogs on leads, especially near pigs, and do not interfere with their natural behaviour.
Pannage is one of the New Forest’s oldest traditions – a reminder of its heritage. If you’re visiting during this window, keep an eye out for these helpful foragers doing their important job – and give them the space they deserve.
