Sleeping in Your Van or Car at Our New Forest Campsites
With more people embracing the freedom of the great outdoors and life on the road, we’re seeing an increase in visitors arriving at our campsites in converted vans or with plans to sleep in their car. We completely understand the appeal – there’s something special about pulling up, bedding down in your own cosy space, and waking up surrounded by forest, birdsong, and fresh air.
But if you’re planning a trip to one of our campsites in the New Forest, it’s important to understand what we mean by “vehicle conversions” and what’s allowed – and what isn’t.

So, are car camping and converted vans allowed?
Yes, we do allow sleeping in vehicles on our campsites – but only if your vehicle meets certain safety and comfort standards. It needs to be properly converted for sleeping, with constant ventilation, a designated sleeping area, and safe access in and out of the space.
What counts as a proper conversion?
If your van or vehicle has a fixed bed or platform with a mattress, constant airflow (such as windows with rain protection or roof vents), and something to provide privacy like curtains or blinds, then you’re likely to be okay. Be aware though that your vehicles dashboard a/c vents do not qualify as a form of constant airflow. Also, if your sleeping compartment has no windows, you’ll need to be able to access it from the front seats (i.e., no bulkhead in the way) in case of an emergency.
It’s also good to note, simply reclining your seats and sleeping in a car without airflow or privacy won’t meet our requirements – it’s uncomfortable for you and not suitable for our sites.

Additional bits to consider
If you’re using your vehicle for sleeping and there isn’t enough space inside to change or use the loo, you’ll need to bring a small toilet tent and a separate changing area – especially on our more back to nature sites where facilities are not provided.
