From coastal walks and cosy pubs to woodland wildlife, November is full of charm in the New Forest. Setthorns Campsite is the only site open year-round – and the perfect base to enjoy it all.
As the golden hues of autumn begin to fade, November marks the quiet beauty of late autumn in the New Forest. From crisp morning frosts to the comforting warmth of local pubs, it’s a brilliant time to explore before the festive season fully kicks in. Whether you’re strolling along scenic beaches or warming up beside the fire with a hearty lunch, there’s so much to see and do this month.
Beach Walks
There’s something uniquely refreshing about a beach walk in late autumn. With the summer crowds long gone, the coast feels quieter – and the chill in the air only makes the sea views more dramatic. Wrapped up in a scarf, with the wind on your face and the sound of waves rolling in, it’s the perfect way to embrace the season. Luckily, there are several stunning spots just a short drive from Setthorns Campsite where you can do exactly that. Here are two of our favourites:
Avon Beach
Just 15 minutes from Setthorns, Avon Beach is a scenic stretch of sand and shingle with views across to the Isle of Wight. It’s an easy, gentle walk with plenty to enjoy – colourful beach huts, the backdrop of Highcliffe Castle, and a fresh breeze rolling in off the sea.
Right on the promenade you’ll find The Noisy Lobster, a local favourite offering delicious seafood options. Grab something warm to take away from the kiosk, or head inside their restaurant for a more relaxed lunch out of the cold.
And if you fancy turning your beach visit into a wellness moment, why not try a sauna session or a guided relaxation ritual at The Saltwater Sauna, located right on the beach? It’s a unique way to warm up and recharge.
Parking is easy and convenient, and the beach is family- and dog-friendly too.
Lepe Beach at Lepe Country Park
A little further along the coast, Lepe offers a mile-long beach walk with wide views across the Solent and over to the Isle of Wight. It’s peaceful, panoramic, and perfect for a brisk late-autumn stroll.
At the heart of Lepe Country Park is The Lookout Café, an ideal spot for breakfast, coffee or a light lunch, with outdoor seating if the sun’s out playing ball!
Lepe is also dog friendly, with lots of space to roam, plus marked trails throughout the park if you want to explore further inland. Parking is available on-site, and it’s all just a 25-minute drive from Setthorns.
Cosy Pubs to Warm Up In
After a windswept beach walk or a refreshing ramble through the Forest, there’s no better reward than stepping into a warm pub with a roaring fire and the smell of comforting food in the air. November is all about embracing the chill – but also escaping it when it counts.
Whether you’re after a laid-back pint, a plate of hearty pub grub, or something a little more refined, the New Forest is full of welcoming eateries perfect for a post-adventure refuel. Here are a few of our favourites, all within easy reach of Setthorns Campsite:
The White Buck, Burley
Just an 8-minute drive from Setthorns, The White Buck is a beautifully restored former country house on the edge of Burley. Surrounded by woodland and ponies, it’s the kind of place that feels like a proper New Forest retreat. The pub offers a seasonal menu packed with hearty favourites – think Hampshire game casserole, homemade pies, and rich puddings. Cosy corners, leather armchairs, and a great drinks selection make this a top spot for a lazy autumn afternoon.
The Gun Inn, Keyhaven
If you’re venturing towards the coast, The Gun Inn at Keyhaven is a lovely little stop, with a traditional pub feel and nearby views of the Solent and Hurst Castle. It’s recently been renovated but still holds onto its character – expect wooden beams, friendly staff, and solid, comforting pub fare. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, and perfect for those who like their food with a side of sea air. There’s convenient parking nearby too, and it’s just 20 minutes from Setthorns Campsite!
The Pig, Brockenhurst
For a special treat during your New Forest stay, The Pig offers a more premium experience – but still with that rustic, down-to-earth charm the Forest is known for. The menu is built around homegrown produce and local suppliers, and the atmosphere feels indulgent. It’s a highly sought-after spot, so booking ahead is recommended – especially at weekends. Only a 10-minute drive from Setthorns, it’s a great choice if you’re celebrating something or just fancy elevating your weekend!
Events in November
As the Forest shifts into its quietest season, a different kind of magic takes over – twinkling lights, markets and unique wildlife experiences. If you’re staying at Setthorns this November, there are plenty of local events to make your autumn break extra special.
Here’s a round-up of what’s happening nearby this month:
