During World War II, Holmsley South airfield played a crucial role in the war effort. It was home to various aircraft, including the legendary Spitfire, which was instrumental during the war. Today, the campsite keeps this history alive by incorporating elements of its past into a fun, educational, and immersive play area for young adventurers.
This exciting new play park is part of a wider range of improvements at Holmsley Campsite, alongside the refurbishment of our on-site shop, The Hanger, and other enhancements set to be ready for the 2025 season. You can read more about these updates in our previous blog post!
A Playground Built for Exploration
Currently under construction, the Spitfire play park is being crafted to resemble the iconic fighter aircraft, featuring the aircraft’s wings, and cockpit. Young visitors will be able to climb aboard, balance across the wings, and use the interactive elements to imagine themselves soaring through the skies.
This new addition will create an engaging space where children can play, learn, and develop a deeper appreciation for the area’s historical significance.
Join Us For VE Day Celebrations
The Spitfire play park and other upgrades to Holmsley are set to be completed ahead of Campsite’s VE Day celebrations on May 8-10, 2025. The event will feature a variety of commemorative activities, including a beacon lighting ceremony, vintage games, live wartime music, and historical presentations.
